When I first met our head teacher Ra Wilson, he had just launched his artist project Jet Vesper. Over the past three years I witnessed him go from basically zero to about 3 million streams across platforms, a steadily growing fanbase and he’s touring all around the world with his band. The best thing about all of this is that Jet Vesper is completely made by himself, and yet creates an image you’d expect of a label-backed artist brand.

I got curious to know more about how Ra went about building Jet Vesper. Aside from having been able to witness him grow, he’s also had one of the biggest impacts on my own artist project, Sonj Marina, and I owe a big part of my success to the mentoring he gave me as we’ve worked side by side.

So I’m excited to share this interview in which he tells me the story of Jet Vesper. He shares how he went from collaborating with all major labels on his previous band, Monarchy, to starting his current project. He goes on to share what he focused on when he got started, his songwriting process, how he found his band members and how he gets his gigs.

In this video, he drops one wisdom bomb after the other, so I hope you enjoy the chat and get some good take-aways for your own endeavour!

About Jet Vesper:

Jet Vesper is the genre-blending singer, producer, and songwriter behind a fresh sonic adventure that is as intimate as it is infectious. With an unmistakable groove rooted in the golden era of funk, yacht rock and disco, his music delivers a modern twist—effortlessly bridging the gap between nostalgic soul and futuristic pop.

Think Curtis Mayfield meets Daft Punk on a sun-drenched beach in 2030, where shimmering synths, velvety vocals, and deep basslines create a sound that feels both timeless and cutting-edge. His intricate melodies and smooth production have drawn comparisons to the likes of Parcels, Jungle, and Tom Misch, setting the stage for a vibrant musical journey that’s impossible to resist.

Recognized as a rising star, Jet Vesper secured a spot on NME’s prestigious “Top 100 New Artists” list, with the magazine praising his music as “destined to slip down as smoothly as its cocktail namesake, and leave you just as woozy.” Similarly, Earmilk describes his sound as â€œperfect for an evening soirĂ©e”, blending effortlessly into the atmosphere of late-night cityscapes and sun-kissed dance floors alike.

With a growing presence on the global music scene, Jet Vesper has already garnered attention from tastemaker playlists, international radio stations, and festival circuits, proving that his yacht rock funk-infused, feel-good sound is here to stay. Jet is crafting infectious hooks and producing tracks dripping in warmth and nostalgia for a new generation.
